Greetings from 1974.

Kinja'd!!!

I was 8 years old in 1974, and had a Matchbox of the JPS. It was always one of my favorites. As I sit and drink coffee and read the day’s news, I grow nostalgic for the 1970s.

Here’s Kiki Dee in 1974, with her biggest hit.

I started scrolling and thinking “Evacuation of Saigon?” until I saw the car. When I was a teenage smoker, I tried to get my hands on JPS cigarettes whenever I could. I’m no sucker for advertising, but Nigel Mansell’s mustache made me do it.

FWIW, a car very much like that one is here in the Barber Museum in Birmingham, which is the largest Lotus collection....in the WUUUHRLD.

My 70s soundtrack is mostly defined by what the lifeguards had on the radio at the pool in summer.

The JPS livery is one of my all time favorites.

You know who else had a mustache? I find it interesting that this ad was scanned from Omni magazine. It provides terrific provenance.

Mine is defined by the little red AM transistor radio I carried around. The one that was powered by a single 9V battery and came with a single earphone. Which, interestingly, was white, and everybody gave Steve Jobs shit for making white earbuds.

I had the chance to play for Glen Campbell a few years ago with the orchestra. It was fantastic, and it sounded like my AM radio had come to life. The guy sitting next to me, who is perhaps 10 years younger, had never heard a single Glen Campbell song. I think that’s tragic.

That is tragic. Glen Campbell, John Denver, The Beatles are all part of my life because of my parents and their old vinyl.

Even as a 10-year-old, I cried when I listened to Annie’s Song .
